Not registered in DEERS, or received and error message while trying to register, or not sure if you are in DEERS

I just tried the web site and could not find an access point for a veteran who is not in DEERS. I spoke to a representative who stated that if a veteran is not in DEERS, VA can add a veteran to DEERS. Is this correct? If so, does it require an in-person visit to a VA regional office? How is this supposed to work for elderly and disabled older persons?

If a Veteran is not in DEERS or simply unsure, he or she may request to be added by:
- Calling VA's toll free telephone number at 1-800-827-1000 for assistance,
- Visiting a VA regional office, or
- Logging into the Internet at https://iris.custhelp.com/app/ask and following the steps below:

- State that you need to be added to DEERS in the "Question" data field,
- Under "Please Select a Topic" select "Add Veteran to DEERS/Upgrade" from the drop down list,
- Then select the subtopic, "Can't register (Not in DEERS msg.)." and
- Then select "Question" for the type of inquiry.
